Ancient World Sacred Sites
Some of the biggest building to have survived from antiquities are Temples and religious buildings. The ancient Greeks built magnificent temples that have become iconic symbols of the Ancient World. If you want to see some of the best preserved Ancient Greek Temples don’t go to Greece instead head for southern Italy and Sicily. Many of the Greek temples ruins to be seen there are bigger, older and in better preservation than those in Greece.
Mount Nemrut Sacred Site
Many other great pagan sacred sites can be found in present day Turkey where many great civilisations flourished in Antiquity. The list is long including the Hittites, Lycians, Phrygians and many Hellenistic kingdoms.
One of the most spectacular shrines can be found 6000 ft up on the summit of Mount Dagi. Here pagan god statue heads are arrange where they fell around the mausoleum of Antiochus I, King of Commagene in the first century BC. The view from the mountain top is breathtaking looking down on the river Euphrates which flows into Syria in the distance.
I hope you enjoy the photos
