Art Photos Landscape Pictures of Milford on Sea Beach Huts

By The Sea Milford-on-Sea Hampshire. Art Photos Landscape Pictures of colourful traditional beach huts. One of Englands National Treasures are its beach huts. Milford-On-Sea has over 300 wedged below a low cliff at the back of a narrow shingle beach.

These humble huts are today valuable real estate fetching well over £100,000. These beach huts represent a little piece of English history when once they would have been on wheels, and were pushed into the sea, from where women could descend steps to bathe almost fully clothed with minimum loss of modesty. One of the most joyful sights in any British seas side resort is a line of colourful beach huts. The tradition of beach huts goes back 175 years or so to the time of the first beach holiday makers. It was felt that women modesty has to be protected. As a result a hut on wheels was invented in which shy women could change into bathing clothes. The huts were pushed into the sea and women climbed gingerly down steps to bathe away from prying eyes.

Today beach huts are used by families throughout the summer to shelter from the wind or to make steaming cups of tea in.
