Rhuddlan Castle

Rhuddlan Castle was built in 1277 for Edward I next to the River Clwyd as part of the consolidation of his rule of Wales. Unusually the castle is built in a diamond design and has a distinctive twin round tower gatehouse. The castle overlooks the river which allowed it to be provisioned by ship during a siege. The river was straightened and dredged and a fortified river gate was built to the castle.

After the outbreak of the Welsh Wars in July 1277, Edward I ordered the construction of Rhuddlan Castle. It was building was started by Master Bertram, a Gascon engineer. Building was continued until 1282 by Savoyard master mason, James of St George.

Rhuddlan Castle Ruined

Rhuddlan Castle remained in use until after the end of the English Civil Wars after which it was partially destroyed by Parliamentary troops to prevent it being used again.
