Day Tripper – “Busójárás Carnival” is a reportage photography series by photographer Paul E Williams taken in 16th Feb 2010 in Mohacs Hungary.
“In 2009 I saw a news report on Hungarian TV about the annual Busójárás Carnival in Mohacs. It really interested me so I vowed to see the 2010 carnival.
The Busójárás Carnival is one of the last truly pagan spring festivities in Europe. The people of Mohacs have Serbo-Croatian ancestry. Between 1541 to 1699 their ancestors lived in trepidation under Ottoman rule. For safety they chose to live in the swamps that at the time surrounded Mohacs.
Legend of the Buso
Legend has it that a masked knight appeared to them ordering them to put on scary busós masks and, return to Mohacs making as much noise as possible. When they did so the Ottoman Turks fled Mohacs. In memory of the victory the people of Mohacs celebrate a 3 day spring festival ending on Mardi Gras. Finally the carnival ends with the ritual burning of a coffin, containing “winter”, in the main square of Mohacs.
For 3 days the busós dressed in sheepskin costumes with scary masks parade through the streets of Mohacs. They create as much noise and they can and accost the maidens off the town. It really is a great festival and good fun is had by all” Paul E Williams
