Photo of the Ancient Assyrian sculpted relief orthostats from Nineveh in upper Mesopotamia, present day Iraq.

Situated in the ancient fertile crescent the area around Nineveh has been inhabited since about 6000BC. It is located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River and was the capital and largest city of the Ancient Assyrian Empire, as well as the largest city in the world for several decades.

Nineveh came to importance under the rule of King Sennacherib (704 – 681) who made Nineveh capital of the Assyrian Empire. The Ancient Assyrian relief sculpture panels are from Ashurnasirpals Nineveh North Palace, 668-627 B.C.

The most dramatic scenes on the panels depict a lion hunt from chariots. The king is depicted with a long bow firing arrows to kill the lions.

The Ancient Assyrian Nineveh panels are from the British Museum & the Louvre.

The British Museum London is one of the foremost historical museums in the world.

The Louvre houses important unique ancient Assyrian collections of antiquaries and artefacts. The Ninevah Assyrian collection at the Louvre is an important source of learning for academics and enthusiasts of ancient world.
