The Ancient Assyrians were one of the 4 great Empires that dominated the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean during the Ancient World Era.
Known for their ruthlessness and brutality the Ancient Assyrians ruled with an iron fist. They dominated through the threat of devastation if their commands was not followed. Vassal states that rebelled were destroyed and any that survived were deported from their city.
We know this because the Ancient Assyrians left huge relief panels in the ruins of their palaces that not only depict their exploits but are also covered in cuneiform writings that tell us what they did.The art of the Ancient Assyrians is meticulous and highly detailed. Originally sculpted stone panels would have been painted. Un-painted the wonderful Ancient Assyrian relief panels still show a high level of sophistication that the Assyrian artists had reached.
As with much Ancient World Art the art of the Assyrians is pure propaganda. Stone panels depict Assyrian kings as victors in battle or as great hunters in lion hunts and even conversing with the Gods.
