Discovery of Kaunos

The existence of Kaunos had known by the scholars but its location was unknown until English archaeologist Hoskyn discovered it in 1842.

The Kaunos Rock Tombs are cut into the limestone cliffs of Baliklar Mountain. They are grouped in seven different areas but the most significant ones are the temple style tombs near Daylan.

Unique Lycian Rock Tomb Designs

Rock Tombs in Kaunos are differed from other Lycian designs with their unique façade copies of Hellenistic Temples. Tombs in this style and period are only seen in Kaunos and its hinterland. Unlike other Lycian rock tombs the sides and roof sides are cut all the way round into the cliff face, making them look like buildings within the cliff.

These style of tombs are known as Kaunosian Style Rock Cut Tombs.

Tradition of Rock Tombs
