The Persian Achaemenid Empire

Cyrus II of Persia ( 600 – 530 BC), commonly known as Cyrus the Great, was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, the first Persian empire. Under his rule, the empire conquered all states of the ancient Near East and expanded the Persian Empire into Central Asia. Cyrus the Great created the largest empire the world had yet seen. From the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Indus River in the east.

Achaemenid Persian Art & Brick Tile Panels

As with most Classical Period Civilisations the Achaemenid Persians were heavily influenced by both Ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian art. Persian brick tile panels follow on the tradition created by the Babylonians as can be seen in the Ishtar Gate.

An important enamelled brick decoration, the Archers frieze of Susa, adorned the royal palace of Darius I (r. 522-486 BCE) in Susa. It is on display at the Louvre Museum in France.
