The Phrygians

The Phrygians lived in the Sangarios River Valley in Anatolian Turkey from around1200 BC. The Phrygian heart land remained in the Phrygian Highlands between Eskisehir and Kutahya.

Phrygian Fortresses

In the region which borders of Eskisehir, many Phrygian fortresses were built between the 8th and 6th century BC. The fortresses are usually located on the rocky plateau near deep valleys of Phrygia. In the fortresses were monumental cisterns, silos, tunnels with stairs as well as cult memorials, and chamber tombs.

Phrygian Goddess Cybele


The Phrygians worshipped the Mother Goddess, called Matar (Mother), Matar Areyastin, or Matar Kubileya / Kubeleya, known to the Romans as Cybele.

Phrygian Pottery

Early Phrygian pots were generally hand made and decorated with painted geometric designs. Illustrations of animals were made in a distinctive Phrygian style. From the beginning of the 9th century BC Phrygians started to use the potters wheel.
