Photos of the Enigmatic Dun Carloway Broch Ruins

Photos of the enigmatic Dun Carloway Broch ruins on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

Brochs are among Scotland’s most impressive prehistoric buildings and were the precursors of the Medieval Scottish Tower Houses. The world Broch is derived from lowland Scots who called forts Brough from the old Norse Borg.

The Dun Carloway broch diameter is 14.3 metres and the walls still stand at its original height of 9m. Where the walls have fallen down a cross section of the building reveals its double walled construction. It is the best preserved broch in the Outer Hebrides.

The broch of Dun Carloway was probably constructed about 200 BC and may have been used until about AD 1000 being the Morrison Clan stronghold during the 1500s.

Situated on a craggy hill, Dun Carloway overlooks the dramatic wind swept lochs and mountains of the Isle of Lewis beyond.
