The Rebuilding of York Minster in Gothic Style

York Minster was completed in 1472 replacing an earlier Norman and Saxon church. It is dedicated to Saint Peter.

York Minster took 200 years to build so encompasses all the style of the Gothic period. It has a Decorated Gothic nave: The chapter house is  Perpendicular Gothic: ehe east end and Early English Gothic.

The Biggest Stained Glass Window in the World

Both ends of York Minster have wonderful Gothic stained glass windows The West Window was constructed in 1338, and over the Lady Chapel in the east end is the Great East Window. Finished in 1408 it is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. In the north transept is the Five Sisters Window, each lancet being over 16 metres (52 ft) high. The south transept contains a famous rose window.

York Minster is second only to Canterbury in eclisatical importance. Every King of England would have visited York Minster since it was built, along all the important characters from English History.

Emperor Constantine & York

Outside the South door of York Minster is a statue of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Constantine came to Britain with his father, the emperor Constantius, in 305.  Constantius died in July the following year in York and his troops proclaimed Constantine Caesar. As the Emperor who later ligitimised Christianity his statue is well placed outside such an important cathedral.
