The Foundation of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe

The Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe was consecrated in 549 AD by Bishop Maximian. The church was dedicated to Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna who was martyred during the purges of either Emperor Vespasian or Nero.

Sant’ Apollinare in Classe Mosaics

The beautiful Byzantine Roman mosaics of the Basilica of Sant’ Apollinaire in Classe are incredibly simple with depictions of Saint Apollinaris and sheep against a green background.

Mosaic of the Crucifix

The central apse ceiling mosaic has a simple cross at its centre in a circular panel backed by a blue sky with gold stars. At the centre of the cross is a small depiction of Christ. Above Cross panel a hand is protrudes out of the clouds representing the hand of God.

At the side of the circular Gross panel are the figures of Elijah and Moses.

In the register below the cross are three lambs symbolising the saints Peter, James and John. The trees and rock suggest a mountain setting. This section refers to the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.

Mosaic of Saint Apollinaris

In Bottom register a green valley with rocks, bush, plants and birds is depicted. In the middle Saint Apollinaris is depicted in the act of praying God. On either side of him are 6 lambs facing inwards towards him

Anti Arian Mosaics

The work at the Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe  by order of Bishop Ursicinus an anti Arian Bishop. At that time the Roman Catholic Church was trying to convert all Arian Goths to the Nicene Creed. The Arians believed that Christ was only a Man, the Nicene Creed believes that Christ was both Divine and a Man.

The mosaics at The Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe are anti Arian displaying Christ as divine at the centre of the cross.
