Dire Straits On Every Street Polaroid Photos Art

Dire Straits On Every Street Album cover photo by photographer Paul E Williams in 1991

“The Polaroid photos in this gallery were taken at the Old Air Studios that overlooked Oxford Circus in London. Mark Knopfler was doing the final mix of the album and was using the whole top floor studio complex.

In the first place it was a hard to decission as to whether I could use this polaroid technique as it was very unpredictable. As a professional photographer I cannot allow for unpredictability on a shoot as I have to know I can deliver. I took a leap of faith though and took the photos on a 10×8 wooden Gandolfi view camera.

Once I had set up the camera and lighting I took the first polaroid and then solarised it under a strong light. With this technique there is little to see apart from a latent image on a black backing paper. I took 12 or so photos and laid them out on the mixing desk. Mark Knpfler took a long time looking at them then finally pointed to one photo and then that was that.

The one he chose for the album cover. is frame #1 in this gallery. I include some others that have never been seen before for your enjoyment”. Paul
