West Nile was less remote than Karamoja and the muslim people who lived there were very well organised. They were keen to rebuild schools and give their children an education. After many years of conflict in Uganda most buildings had been destroyed. This meant starting from scratch. Old wells had to be cleared. stone aggregate had to be made by smashing rocks. Mud bricks had to be made so new buildings could be built. The determination with which the people of West Nile were facing these tasks was impressive.
It’s incredible to observe people who have meagre resources pull as a community to get projects done. We don’t think or pull together as communities in the west any more. Capitalism has turned us into individuals who look out for ourselves. This both wrong and dangerous for our world. We should be learning from Africa instead of exploiting and patronising its people.
