Photos of Cappadocia Rock Formations

The central Anatolian plateau of Cappadocia was once a volcanic area. Volcanic ash from the volcanoes solidified into volcanic tuff well over a hundred meters deep. The underground city of Derinkuyu may reach 113 meters underground. Tuff is soft and it is easy to dig into it to make cave buildings.

Early Christians went to remote Cappadocia to get away from Roman persecutions. They build cave churches and underground monasteries complexes all over Cappadocia. Towns and castles were also built into the bigger rock formations of Cappadocia.

Over the millennia water eroded the soft tuff rock leaving incredible rock formations and rock pillars known as fairy chimneys, some of which became cave houses.

All of these features make Cappadocia a popular must see tourist destination.

Photos of Hot Air Balloons of Cappadocia

Every dawn, weather permitting, during the tourist season, the sky above Goreme in Cappadocia filled with colourful hot air balloons. This is one of the great tourist sights in the world.

The skill of the balloon pilots is incredible as they descend into remote valleys of Cappadocia and float amongst the fairy chimney rock formations. This gives the tourists a unique and close up view of the wonderful rock formations of Cappadocia.

The photos in this series were taken over several sunrises in different locations around Goreme. Working from my Land Rover Defender I could easily track the balloons and find off road vantage points to photography them. I hope you enjoy the photos.
